Fostering belonging in a CALD school environment: learning from a research collaboration with a refugee and migrant school community in Australia

School belonging is fundamental to the wellbeing and academic success of culturally linguistically diverse (CALD) students. While psychosocial factors associated with have been well articulated, ways in which schools foster for this cohort relatively unexplored. This paper discusses a research collaboration that investigated create promote belonging. The study was conducted an Australian school dedicated settlement English language development newly arrived migrant refugee children. Digital storytelling used as methodology listen learn from experiences staff, students their families. findings comprised three key strategies central creation at school: helping families adapt environment; building socially supportive relationships; fostering connectedness.
